When you approach a problem, do you treat the symptom or do you treat the cause? In a perfect world, you treat both. Nevertheless, in western medicine, symptoms generally get the bulk of the attention. Here at bmiSMART™, we decided to take a more holistic approach and consider both the symptoms and causes of being overweight.
Are you ready to start your weight-loss journey? Lao Tzu, the father of Taoism wrote, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” We’re going to stretch that a bit and urge you to take one… two… three steps.
Step one, forgive yourself for past decisions that put the weight on in the first place. They’re done. Instead of focusing on failures, work on cultivating the mindful practice of noticing and reversing negative self-talk. Instead of, “yikes, I’m a total slob. I gained so much weight last year” try, “I’m excited to pay more attention to what I’m eating. I know it’s going to change how I feel and how I look.”
Step two, it’s time to commit. Write a journal, keep a calendar or start a daily habit that sets your every-day weight-loss intention and solidifies your trajectory towards achieving a healthy weight. Then, select family and friends who will support you on your weight-loss journey. Let them know your starting date, and, if they’re the right kind of friends, tell them your starting weight and weight-loss goals too. Also, if you believe your social media networks are a safe and encouraging part of your life, share the news with those who will send well-wishes back your way.
Step Three, find a weight-loss program you can stick to. Whether that’s a diet or a system of weight-loss products, it needs to be something you can continue for the long-term. Short-term weight loss (and the inevitable, yo-yo weight gain) is hard on both your body and your confidence.
Your third step is extremely important. After you’ve begun to cultivate mindful acceptance and have committed to your weight-loss journey, selecting a program that will not only help you lose weight, but keep it off, is a critical part of achieving lifelong healthy weight.
Find a weight-loss program you can stick to.
According to a USDA-funded study comparing several well-known diets, researchers found it didn’t matter which diet participants followed, only that they followed it for a full year and reduced overall calories.
So, it seems like the best strategy for making permanent change is selecting a program or diet to reduce calories that is simple enough for you to start, flexible enough to fit your lifestyle, forgiving enough for you to stick with and robust enough to produce real results.
What program, diet or supplement is right for me?
Looking at the many programs and diets available, ample evidence shows that adherence to constricting, regimented diets and/or artificial stimulants CAN be effective for temporary weight loss. But, is this approach really sustainable for your mind and body?
When considering restrictive diets, it’s important to remember that motivation is a finite resource. You can only wake up so many days in a row and eat a grain-free diet or push yourself to eat celery and do 100 crunches. Stimulant-based drugs have severe limitations as well. The intrinsic nature of stimulants requires you to progressively increase dosage to ensure effectiveness—an upward trend that can be dangerous for both your body and your wallet.
